pick muted colors for family shoots

Bright colors have their place in graduation and stylized photoshoots, but for family photos, consider using muted versions of your favorite colors.

Mix in neutrals

Adding beige, tan, cream, and/or gray to your color scheme is a good way break up solid colors and add interest to your photos. Think of putting a cream shirt under a jacket, or soft grey tights and a beige bow with a girl's dress.

avoid wearing just a t-shirt

T-shirts are easy and comfortable, but they're a bit casual for photos. For men, always pick a casual button down shirt or half zip sweater instead. If someone in your group must wear a t-shirt, encourage them to wear a cardigan, jacket, shawl, or vest with it to "dress it up."

Pick ladies' outfits first and then build from there

Start with the ladies, since women’s clothing often has more color and print than men's. I always go for dresses, as they are flattering and make your photo pop. If you hate dresses, choose something that is slightly dressier than your everyday look. Opt for high quality fabric (not t-shirt material) because it hangs better.

Consider Location

Beach session, or dressed up downtown? Will you be walking through wildflower fields or hiking in the mountains? Consider the vibe you want, and make sure your clothing matches the location.

Coordinate without being matchy matchy

Avoid wearing the same color top as your spouse or putting your girls in matching dresses.

After the ladies' outfits are chosen, find 1-2 matching colors, plus a couple neutrals that complement.

Makeup and accessories

Ladies, makeup always enhances your photos, as lighting conditions can affect your skin tone and appearance. Accessories like hats and jewelry are great for making your photos stand out, but make sure they don't tangle easily or get in the way of you being yourself.

dress for the weather, and prep clothing in advance

Nothing worse than sweating at a summer shoot, or freezing at a winter shoot. Wear clothing that is comfortable and weather appropriate. And, always make sure to iron your clothing ahead of time.
